“Allegory” is a collection of photos from others’ family albums. Photos of the sea, the forest and snow, dated on the back by the persons and selected by them to convey what each of these places meant to them. Each photograph is a snapshot of an individual’s memory, a concept or representation that they carry within themselves. And yet, when we put the photographs together, the uniqueness of each personal image fades into a background of commonality— that we may call a collective consciousness or perhaps more accurately, a collective unconscious that colors and informs the individual experience outside of their awareness. 

I see a photograph not only as a personal record of moments in life, but also a testament to something more essential in all of us, a common humanity that makes us akin to one another, despite all of our differences. “Allegory” is a collage of single snapshots taken from different lenses, knitted together to form a unity— the concepts of “sea”, “forest” and “snow”. Each photograph is only a part of the thing/concept, but it is the whole that is the closest to the thing/concept itself. And in this way, it captures the essence of it.
